Abstract: The absorption spectra of 4-hydroxybenzylidene malononitrile in different solvent systems have been studied in this work. It was found that this compound has a proton equilibrium under the different pH condition that results in a variation of absorption spectra observed. Thereby, the title compound is expected to be used as a new acidic indicator in nonaqueous media.
