Preparation of Short Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes by CVDGrowth and by Chemical Oxidation

Abstract: Short single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were prepared by shortening CVD growth time and by postsynthesis chemical oxidation with ultrasonication. Most of the SWNTs could be controlled to be shorter than 500 nm by both the two methods. However, Raman spectra show that shortening CVD time results in the decrease of amorphous carbon impurities, but in the oxidation process the damage of SWNTs occurred and amorphous carbon impurities increased. The short SWNTs directly synthesized by CVD have higher purity than that by chemical oxidation.
