Abstract: Nanostructured CuF2 thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on stainless steel substrates. The charge and discharge curves showed a high reversible capacity of 540 mAh·g-1, corresponding to 2.0 Li per CuF2. The cyclic voltammograms showed that a new couple of reduction and oxidation peaks at 2.2 and 2.8 V (vs Li/Li+) appeared for the first time. The components and structure of the films after charging and discharging were characterized by ex-situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction measurements. Electrochemical reaction mechanism of nanostructured CuF2 thin films with lithium was revealed, in which the reversible decomposition and formation of LiF driven by transition metal Cu were involved.
