Abstract: In this paper XPS studies of (Ph_3P)_3Cu_nX_n complexes have been reported. The XPS shifts of inner shell binding energies show that P→Cu dative bond exists in (Ph_3P)_3Cu_nX_n complexes. The large shifts of Cu 2P_(3/2) and P 2d binding energies of (Ph_3P)_3Cu(CN) and (Ph_3P)_3Cu_2(CN)_2 complexes are due to the feedback effect of Cu 3d~(10) electrons. The results XPS shake-up satellite peaks furthermore confirm the existence of P→Cu dative bond in these complexes. In addition, XPS valence band spectra of these complexes appear to be superposition from the XPS valence band spectra of CuX and Ph_3P.
